Mid Atlantic Cup
The buzz around Richmond, Virginia was that the ground for the inaugural Mid Atlantic Cup was one of the best we’ve played on – and we weren’t disappointed!
The DC Eagles arrived at Glover Park on Saturday to spectacular turf and a full AFL ground, testament to the growing expertise and presence of the sport in the U.S.
The sun was shining, the bleachers were full, and the four-and-twenty pies were hot!
Washington DC, Baltimore, North Carolina and Richmond were all represented on the day, with the battle for the Cup played as a rotating tournament:
- DC Eagles def. North Carolina Tigers/Richmond Virginia Lions
- Baltimore Dockers def. North Carolina Tigers/Richmond Virginia Lions
- DC Eagles/Baltimore Dockers/North Carolina Tigers (women) def. DC Eagles/Baltimore Dockers (men)
- Baltimore Dockers def. DC Eagles to secure the Mid Atlantic Cup!
It was a great day of hard and skillful footy from all clubs. There were spectacular passages of play, especially considering this was the first match of the season. Established players used the good sized field to showcase power off the boot, while many new recruits exceeded expectations with their skill, instinct and strength at the ball. The Eagles were devastated to lose forward Scott Lowe to a fractured leg and everyone who participated wishes him a speedy recovery.
As Richmond continue to recruit and develop a women’s side, the visiting clubs were pleased to be able to demonstrate the quality of the women’s competition. The team played effectively as a unit to feed the ball into the forward line, where hard won contests were converted into goals. Thanks to the men that provided an opposition (their 3rd, in some cases 4th, game of the day.)
Sincere thanks to Darren at the Richmond Lions for putting on such a fantastic event. We look forward to playing your growing club again in 2019, and beyond.
