Aussie Rules-X – DC’s first metro for 2019
The Eagles metro season kicked off with players tuning into the live Draft. Coaches selected men/women + new/returning players equally, ensuring that the DC Diablos were evenly matched against the Virginia Vikings.
Friends became foes when the teams lined up in the center of the West Potomac Park ground. Coach Olivia won the toss, selecting the non-river side for the Diablos, though there wasn’t a good end in the whirlwind conditions. Teams heard AFL rule updates from expert umpires Luc and T-bird, then games begun.
5 goals in the first quarter confirmed that both sides had COME! TO! PLAY! New recruits Mackenzie and Craig went for the ball with the ferociousness the DC Eagles are looking for – though unfortunately it meant their collision was heard all around the city. Speed demons Lough, Mike and Pauly were racing the ball out of the center and covering every inch of the ground.
6 more goals in the second quarter saw scores remain close with the Diablos (41) leading the Vikings (39). CC wasn’t letting anything through, and completely lost her voice directing players from the backline, while a wild face-bounce surprised Scott Lowe who was zipping all over the forward line. New recruit Chelsea’s marathon running credentials were evident as she covered the field, and covered Johanna in the ruck.
Coach Ryan led by example, booting goals from all over the place. While returning players Bill, Scotty and Seth showed new players how it’s done with toughness at the ball.
An exciting lead change saw the Vikings take a 4 point margin (54 to 50) into 3 quarter time. But unfortunately for the Vikings, the Diablos weren’t having a bar of it and booted 3 in the final quarter to take the game by 2 points. Diablos 10.10.70 defeated Vikings 9.14.68.
Adz, Kenny, James, Nif and Geoff all generated buzz by showcasing the speed and skills they will contribute to the team in 2019. While regulars Mariam, Jesse and Tommy showed that they don’t need a warm up: SEASON 2019 IS HERE!
